“You can’t rise unless you lift other up with you” reads the ethos of East London’s romance.fc, perfectly encapsulating the impact the team has had on women’s grassroots football worldwide. Originally formed as Boiler Room FC, Romance is a football collective for women and non-binary players with members from all over the creative scene (graphic designers, DJs, stylists...) training with the group weekly. Led by player-manager Trisha Lewis, Romance FC’s name is synonymous with the explosive growth of women’s grassroots football over the last decade, with 300+ teams now playing in the capital alone. But Romance is so much more than what happens on the pitch. Tournaments created by the team, Playing For Kicks and Spring Kicks, have bought together players from across London and Paris, and talks such as A Little Less Conversation provide an alternative space to talk about some of football's bigger issues.
