When Columbus Crew fans were told their team was moving to Austin in 2017, they refused to accept it. They formed #SaveTheCrew the next day and rallied behind the core of their community. And they won. The Crew stayed in Columbus, changed owners, built a new stadium, and amazingly won the MLS Cup in 2020. Meanwhile Austin FC was formed and joined MLS in 2021, and guess who fate has pitted them against in their second home fixture? You guessed it. This Sunday will see the first game of a rivalry which already exists, which so far has not required football matches to create tension. It’s going to be special.
