Technology changes are coming to college football.
After testing helmet communication during the 2023-24 bowl season, the NCAA has officially permitted the use for the upcoming 2024 season. Auburn did not utilize the headsets during the Music City Bowl against Maryland, who did.
The new collegiate rules are similar to the NFL's rules. Only one player on each side of the ball will be permitted to wear the equipped communication devices. Those players will be identified with a green dot decal on the back of their helmets.
Communication will be cut off when the play clock hits 15 seconds remaining or when the ball is snapped. During the bowl games, communication was open throughout each play.
The use of tablets on the sidelines to review plays was also approved for full-time use after the bowl game test period.
