In 2021, Sadiq Khan launched his bid for re-election with a pledge to build 40,000 council homes by the end of the decade, an average of approximately 7,300 a year. But, with around 325,000 households on London local authority waiting lists, that pledge is, quite frankly an insult, lacking in ambition and conscience, to every single citizen of our nation’s once great capital. As the most popular independent candidate in the upcoming London Mayor election, I believe that the mayor’s position is untenable. He boasts about building 7,300 local authority homes a year and yet, by his own figures, this means it would take 44 years to clear the backlog in London, and even that relies on demand for such housing remaining stable. He has had eight years in which to revamp the capital’s housing provision and yet seems content to gaslight voters with a housing policy which, at its heart, could see Londoners die while they wait for a home.
