With the frequency of criminal offenses gradually increasing around UT and West Campus since 2017, students have expressed safety concerns. This acted as a catalyst to the discussion of the 2016 murder of Haruka Weiser, which led to the University allocating millions of dollars to increase safety measures on and around campus, such as adding new light fixtures and the latest initiative, the West Campus Ambassadors program.
