As a Family Doctor serving the underserved in Des Moines, normal days can be hard for my patients. This year has been harder. Food pantries are low on goods and a lot of my patients are out of work, often afraid to come to the doctor. I feel God’s presence on good days. We do OB in our office, and there is nothing happier than seeing new babies. There is also joy when a patient with COVID-19 fights the virus and wins. God was there this morning when I walked in and saw my colleague studying the Bible at his desk before going to see patients. God is there as my Life-Group prays for me and my colleagues every week to stay safe. He’s there when we find a homeless mom a place to stay, or when we get a coat for a child, or even when we pray with a patient who needs the comfort of God’s word. I feel God’s presence on bad days, when patients we’ve known and cared for struggle until they can’t breathe on their own. He’s there when we are fearful to take the virus home to those we love.
