How can this be “the land of the free”, when we have the highest rate of incarcerated citizens in the entire world? How can this be “the home of brave” when a woman’s bravery to speak out against sexual misconduct at her military base is rewarded with a shallow grave and being bludgeoned to death? In the Declaration of Independence one of our first inalienable rights is “the right to life”; and yet we can all think of a long, and continuously growing list of names of black, brown and other citizens of color who had that right violated by the same people who were supposed to be protecting it. I’m ashamed and disgusted with the state of this country. There’s nothing to celebrate today. Not when Breonna Taylor’s murderers (Brett Hankison, Jon Mattingly, and Myles Cosgrove) still walk free. Not when Elijah McClains’s murderers (Nathan Woodyard, Jason Rosenblatt, and Randy Roedema) still walk free. Not when Tamir Rice’s murderer (Timothy Loehmann) still walks free. Not when Kendrick Johnson...
