The Duck from down under, Charlie Hunter entered the rings in the colors of his country with one thing on his mind- cut the pesky 4 hundredths of a second off his time keeping him from sub 1:45.20, the Olympic Standard. The chase was on from the gun through the first quarter in 50 mid and then the hunt commenced in earnest down the back straight when the final rabbit stepped off. Hunter charged past the trees and screaming fans, charging powerfully to the line and stopping the clock in 1:44.35 Committing early to a pace toward previously unexplored territory, he obliterated the Olympic standard and became the second fastest Australian of all time. On a track at twilight, in the Oregon wilderness, constructed on the site of an old mill pond, where the timber that built the grandstands of the old Hayward Field once floated before being trucked downriver to the beating heart of the track and field world.
