A card player knows that in order to exploit holes that the house has overlooked, one must play the straight hand over and over, beating back the temptation to make a grand move. Eventually the whole house comes down. You can see it in the mechanisms of his stride, short but quick. It keeps going. It never appears to lengthen or shorten, just quicken and slow. With his schedule freed up to focus solely on training, he minded all the little details that would allow him to ratchet up his mileage and expand the reach of his engine. His first trip to Tracklandia yielded immediate returns. At the 2015 Portland Track Festival, he sliced 29 seconds from his 10k best.
