These are 800m runners. They are naturally fast, we know that. But running one lap in 45 seconds will only get them so far—roughly half way. That second lap is all strength, but convincing athletes to buy into the mileage can be tough. Then we have cgiestin and robo_800 who have committed themselves to running 55-60mpw this fall. Right now, they feel slow. But a quick calendar check confirms it’s November and therefore, it’s OK. We won’t gauge fitness with races for months to come. The emphasis today is on threshold work and long runs. And with this bigger base they will discover higher peaks than ever before. You have to trust the process of taking a step back before many fast ones forward. It’s a long term investment and strength work is one that will pays dividends.
