Today marks 40 years since the outbreak of the Falklands War - Guerra de las Malvinas. A conflict over the sovereignty of the South Atlantic archipelago, Argentina claimed what the British maintained was its overseas territory, along with South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. ⁠ Lasting 74 days, Argentina surrendered on 14 June 1982; while the islands were returned to British control, and diplomatic relations have since been restored, the dispute remains in motion to this day. ⁠ In total, 649 Argentine military personnel, 255 British, and three Islanders died during the hostilities.⁠ This week, gettyarchive will be hosting a takeover from photojournalist davidlevenson, introducing recently uncovered images from the end of the war.
