Today marks 40 years since the outbreak of the Falklands War - Guerra de las Malvinas. A conflict over the sovereignty of the South Atlantic archipelago, Argentina claimed what the British maintained was its overseas territory, along with South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.
Lasting 74 days, Argentina surrendered on 14 June 1982; while the islands were returned to British control, and diplomatic relations have since been restored, the dispute remains in motion to this day.
In total, 649 Argentine military personnel, 255 British, and three Islanders died during the hostilities.
This week, gettyarchive will be hosting a takeover from photojournalist davidlevenson, introducing recently uncovered images from the end of the war. His image of a British homecoming is included here, alongside coverage from photographers working in the UK, Argentina, and the Islands themselves.
