February is LGBT+ History Month in the UK, which this year explores the theme of Politics in Art: 'The Arc is Long'.⁠ Insisting on "No prefix, suffix, or quotes", British painter Gluck was born in 1895 and led a life as singular as their moniker.⁠ Adopting androgynous dress and behaviors against the gender prescriptions of the time, Gluck's non-conformity extended to the canvas - refusing to be identified with any one art movement and only exhibiting solo.⁠ Their 1937 work 'Medallion (YouWe)', a dual portrait of Gluck and partner Nesta Obermer, was used as the cover of Radclyffe Hall’s 'The Well of Loneliness', the 1928 novel and trailblazer of LGBT+ literature. ⁠ Another of Gluck's relationships, with Constance Spry, was explored in their work, with Gluck painting from the British florist's fantastical arrangements.⁠ Not one to accept the world as it was presented, Gluck led a long campaign to improve the quality of oil paints with the British Standards Institution eventually acting o...
