Photographed in May 1942, enlisted men of the Naval Air Station at Kaneohe, Hawaii, place leis on the graves of their comrades killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor. The military strike by Imperial Japan on US territory had taken place on 7 December 1941. Cited by then President Franklin D. Roosevelt as "a date which will live in infamy", the attack had come without an official declaration of war. A neutral country since the outbreak of conflict in 1939, the US entered into WWII the following day. Follow our bio link for stills and footage from gettyarchive.
