In honor of Earth Day 2021, this week we are highlighting some of our recent environmental features.
According to economic think tank Ibon Foundation, lack of supply and surging inflation has caused the prices of protein such as pork to skyrocket and made food unaffordable for many Filipinos already reeling from the impact of the pandemic on their livelihoods. Strapped for cash and food, Filipinos have begun converting vacant spaces in urban areas such as football fields, basketball courts, and parking lots into community farms, securing their own food supply and providing an alternative livelihood. As of March 2021, The Philippines was experiencing the second-worst outbreak of COVID-19 in Southeast Asia, a year after a government-imposed lockdown which has caused millions of Filipinos to go jobless and hungry.
