Jubilation fills the frame as residents of Newark, New Jersey, celebrate the news of Imperial Japan's surrender in August 1945, effectively ending WWII.
The announcement had been made in Japan by Emperor Hirohito at noon on 15 August, one of the first occasions that the Emperor had addressed his nation at large, in a broadcast delivered in Classical Japanese. The anniversary is now commemorated in Japan as "the day for mourning of war dead and praying for peace".
A formal surrender followed on 2 September in Tokyo Bay aboard the USS Missouri, with both dates observed as V-J Day in different nations around the world.
