"The world is before you and you need not take it or leave it as it was when you came in." American writer and activist James Baldwin in his essay 'In Search of a Majority', adapted from an address made in 1960. Born on this day in 1924, Baldwin's words continue to give powerful voice to both the Civil Rights and LGBTQ+ movements of today. Just recently, two of Baldwin's titles have been adapted for the screen to widespread acclaim. An unfinished manuscript, 'Remember This House', inspired Raoul Peck's 2016 documentary 'I Am Not Your Negro', while the award-winning 'If Beale Street Could Talk' was based on the 1974 novel of the same name. 📷: Sophie Bassouls/Sygma via Getty Images l 27 April 1972 l #GettyImages25 #PreservingThePast #GettyArchive #jamesbaldwin #sophiebassouls #sygma #sygmaarchive #thefirenexttime #giovannisroom #ifbealestreetcouldtalk #nonameinthestreet #notesofanativeson #civilrights #lgbtqrights #blackhistory #lgbtqhistory #americanhistory #americanliterature...
