Today marks ninety years since construction began on the Hoover Dam. The highest concrete arch dam in the United States, it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1985 and draws millions of visitors each year. A feat of engineering, 112 deaths were reported in association with its building. A memorial, inscribed "They Died to Make the Desert Bloom", was designed by Oskar J. W. Hansen, whose Art Deco sculptures dot the site.
