Today marks ninety years since construction began on the Hoover Dam. The highest concrete arch dam in the United States, it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1985 and draws millions of visitors each year. A feat of engineering, 112 deaths were reported in association with its building. A memorial, inscribed "They Died to Make the Desert Bloom", was designed by Oskar J. W. Hansen, whose Art Deco sculptures dot the site. For more Hoover Dam history from gettyarchive, follow our bio link. 📷: Dick Whittington Studio/University of Southern California/Corbis via Getty Images l 1934 l #GettyImages25 #PreservingThePast #GettyArchive #hooverdam #boulderdam #dickwhittingtonstudio #universityofsoutherncalifornia #blackcanyon #coloradoriver #greatdepression #americanlandmark #USlandmark #architecturephotography #engineeringphotography #FDR #landscapephotography #onthisdayinhistory #onthisday #lakemead #bouldercity #engineeringhistory #UShistory #historyphoto #historyphotographe...
