What is now the largest event of its kind in the world began in 1970 to mark the one year anniversary of the Stonewall Riot. The first pride, known as the Christopher Street Liberation March, featured a group of around 2,000 people (the exact number is unknown and open to interpretation) traveling from Christopher Street to Central Park along Sixth Avenue. In the early years, the march was not without risk—one attendee said the group’s pace increased considerably once they left the safer confines of Greenwich Village.
