On 4th May 1970, four students were killed and nine wounded after members of the National Guard opened fire during a mass protest at Kent State University.
The unarmed students were demonstrating against the US bombing of Cambodia when the guards fired an estimated 67 rounds over a period of 13 seconds.
John Filo, then a journalism student at the university and part-time news photographer, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for this image, taken in the immediate aftermath.
Teenager Mary Ann Vecchio is shown screaming as she kneels over the body of student Jeffrey Miller. Miller was killed in the shooting, as were Allison Krause, William Schroeder and Sandra Scheuer.
