The wreck of a light aircraft on the streets of Saigon, following the fall of the South Vietnam capital to the People's Army of Vietnam and the Viet Cong, on 30 April 1975. Bringing an end to the Vietnam War and leading to the formal reunification of the country, Saigon was renamed Hồ Chí Minh City, after the late North Vietnamese President. Some 7,000 US and "at-risk" Vietnamese citizens had been evacuated from the city in the preceding days, during Operation Frequent Wind. Marking the 45th anniversary, see gettyarchive for footage of the conflict and its final days. 📷: Francoise De Mulder/Roger Viollet via Getty Images |
