Today marks 75 years since the Battle of Okinawa, the bloodiest assault in the Pacific Theatre of World War II. Fought between US Forces and the Japanese Imperial Army across 82 days, there were an estimated 160,000 casualties amongst soldiers. Up to 150,000 residents of the Japanese island, half of the pre-war population, are thought to have lost their lives. The largest amphibious campaign of the Pacific War, and terrorised by kamikaze attacks, the intensity of the battle became known as "tetsu no bōfū" - violent wind of steel. Here, a US marine looks out over Naha, after the capital of the Prefecture had been bombarded. Follow our bio link for more coverage from gettyarchive. 📷: US Marine Corps/Getty Images | #GettyImages25 #PreservingThePast #GettyArchive #battleofokinawa #operationiceberg #WWII #pacificwar #militaryhistory #worldwartwo #USmarinecorp #WWIIhistory #warhistory #1945 #onthisdayinhistory #onthisday #historyphoto #historyphotographed #warphotography #conflictp...
