Born in Vienna, photographer Gerti Deutsch was influenced by avant-garde movements that saw the medium flourish in Europe & Russia between the wars. Joining the great number of Jewish & intellectual talents forced to flee the continent as the Nazis gained power in the 1930s, the impact that this émigré community had on British & American culture was boundless. ⁠⠀ Deutsch, whose early work in Austria included large-format portraiture, exquisitely-printed landscapes & candid street photography, soon established her own photo studio in London. Stylistically dexterous, she also pursued editorial photography, working with 35mm & 120mm film. ⁠⠀ 1938 saw the launch of Picture Post, the photo-essay magazine which was to herald a new age of photojournalism within the UK, under the editorship of Hungarian Stefan Lorant.
