South African singers Albert Jonas and John Xiniwe, of The African Choir, are pictured in the London Stereoscopic Company studio in 1891. The choir, drawn from seven different South African tribes, toured Britain from 1891 to 1893 to raise funds for a technical college in their home country.
Founded in 1854, the London Stereoscopic Company is one of the oldest collections in the Getty Images Archive, its pictures having reached an international audience of millions during the 19th century.
Today, the LSC's original glass plate negatives are being expertly digitized and shared online - the images out in the world to be enjoyed once again.
Take a look over gettyarchive for an introduction to the collection, and to hear how the LSC impacted the future of photography.
