Concluding our US Black History Month series on master photographers from gettyarchive, today we explore the life & family of photojournalist Robert Abbott Sengstacke.⁠⠀ Born into a publishing dynasty, “Bobby” was the great-nephew of Robert Sengstacke Abbott, the founder of the Chicago Defender newspaper. Established in 1905, the title’s coverage of the Jim Crow era influenced the Great Migration of African American citizens out of the rural Southern states where racial discrimination was most prevalent.⁠⠀ Taken on by Bobby’s father, John H. Sengstacke, in 1940, the weekly paper actively campaigned against segregation & became a daily edition in 1956, coinciding with the gathering pace of the civil rights movement.
