On 23 February 1945, a group of US Marines raised the American flag atop Mount Suribachi amidst the fierce fighting of the Battle of Iwo Jima, during the Pacific War.
The moment produced one of the most recognisable photographs of WWII, captured by Joe Rosenthal. Used as source material for the US Marine Corps War Memorial by sculptor Felix de Weldon, the image is heavy with symbolism.
This alternative picture expands the story, showing a first flag being exchanged for another. Having signalled to troops on the beach below that the Mount had been seized, the flag was said to have been substituted so that it could be returned to the battalion as a souvenir. Dispatching an officer with the replacement, the Lieutenant Commander called out as an afterthought: “And make it a bigger one.” 📷: Louis R.
