At gettyarchive today, the discovery of Antarctica is explored on the 200th anniversary of its earliest recorded sighting. In this remarkable shot, geologist Thomas Griffith Taylor and meteorologist Charles Wright are dwarfed by the entrance to an ice grotto, during Captain Robert Falcon Scott's Terra Nova Expedition to the Antarctic, 5th January 1911. The 'Terra Nova' itself can be glimpsed in the background. In September of that year, Scott and members of the crew set out to become the first men to reach the South Pole. Arriving on 17 January 1912, the British team were second to Roald Amundsen, whose Norwegian crew had broken the coveted ground with their flag just 34 days earlier. A courageous mission overshadowed by tragedy, Scott and his men perished on the return journey. For more historic images of the great icy continent, follow our bio link. 📷: Herbert Ponting/Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge/Getty Images | #gettyarchive #antarctica #antarc...
