The tributes being paid to Terry O'Neill, who has died aged 81, are testament to the enormous regard in which the photographer was held - both by those lucky enough to sit for him, and the millions who have enjoyed his work across the last sixty years. Beginning his career on 1960s Fleet Street, then the heart of British journalism, O’Neill helped drive the decade’s dynamic aesthetic. With early assignments including The Beatles and the Rolling Stones, the Londoner looked and talked like this new kind of celebrity - he understood their style and motivations. Not just a photographer of his own moment, O'Neill would go on to shape and encounter global icons of entertainment, sport, royalty and politics. Bringing verve and rapport to each shoot, his portraits were at times intimate, at times spectacular, and always electrifying.
