"If you're not invited to the party, throw your own."⁠ Pioneering actress and singer Diahann Carroll, who has died aged 84.⁠ The star of 'Julia', the first sitcom headlined by a black female character, Carroll took on roles which had only ever been performed by white actresses.⁠ Her 1962 Broadway performance in 'No Strings' saw her become the first black woman to win the Tony for Best Actress.⁠ Carroll's long career included an Oscar nomination for 'Claudine' in 1974 and memorable small screen roles throughout the 1980s, '90s and 2000s.
