For almost 60 years, scientists with the United States Geological Survey have been studying Alaska's glaciers. In 2013, their research was unified into a single project: measuring changes in glacier mass across North America. Studies now show that the globe's warming climate has resulted in sustained glacial mass loss, as melting has outpaced the accumulation of new snow and ice. As these glaciers melt, scientists are interested in learning how it will impact different parts of the environment, from changes in the food chain to rising sea levels in the Earth's oceans.
