The words spoken by Prince Charles to his mother the Queen upon his Investiture as the Prince of Wales, fifty years ago today, at Caernarfon Castle. The medieval fortress in Gwynedd had hosted the same ceremony when the future King Edward VIII formally received the same title, in 1911, and has a rich history.
During the English Civil War, the Castle was held by the Royalists - if besieged three times by the rival Parliamentarians.
On 1st July 1969, millions tuned in by television and a large crowd of well-wishers lined the streets despite hostility from Welsh nationalists; two men from the militant Mudiad Amddiffyn Cymru lost their lives on the eve of the Investiture, killed while planting a bomb.
