How it was: three quarters of a century ago, on 6th June 1944, the largest seaborne invasion in history saw 132,000 Allied troops land on the beaches of Normandy.
With support from the air and behind enemy lines, D-Day had been a year in preparation. The assault launched the battle to free Western Europe from Nazi occupation, codenamed ‘Operation Overlord’.
With heavy casualties on both sides and amongst the French civilian population, the Allies reached the river Seine by 19th August - the liberation of Paris ahead.⠀
Our story today features vintage colour images from the invasion, before victory was certain or the direction of history set, while our bio link includes more D-Day coverage and context from gettyarchive.⠀
