Holding little sacred but delight, Monty Python are said to have first formed in a Kashmir tandoori restaurant in Hampstead, London, on this day in 1969.
Lauded as “the Beatles of comedy” for their transformation of the medium and dedicated, international fan base, the troupe first found success with their BBC sketch show, Monty Python’s Flying Circus, in the early 1970s.
Irreverent and with a healthy sense of the surreal, absurd characters and situations were enhanced with Terry Gilliam’s fantastic animations.
Reaching new heights across four movies and sell-out tours, individual members John Cleese, Gilliam, Michael Palin, Terry Jones, Eric Idle and the late Graham Chapman have all added to the Python canon with solo projects across the last fifty years.
