Medics rush an injured paratrooper to an evacuation helicopter during the Battle of Hamburger Hill, a Vietnam War assault that commenced fifty years ago today.
Taking place on the Ap Bia Mountain, American soldiers grimly observed that you were liable to be “chewed up like a hamburger” fighting there.
While “Hill 937” was captured by the US forces after a ten day battle - with the deaths of 72 US soldiers and an estimated 630 amongst the People’s Army of Vietnam - it was abandoned less than three weeks later.
The event marked a decisive shift in public opinion against the war and in Congress, where the actions of the military leadership were heavily criticised.
