Today marks twenty five years since the beginning of the Rwandan genocide. Across 100 days, 800,000 people from the Tutsi minority were slaughtered along with moderate Hutus, in violence directed by ethnic Hutu extremists during the Rwandan Civil War. The nation’s president, Paul Kagame, led a rebel force that ended the killing and began commemorative events today with a flame-lighting ceremony. “In 1994, there was no hope, only darkness. Today, light radiates from this place. How did it happen?
