“This was at the end of a long drive into one of the hottest and driest places on earth - the Danakil Depression in Ethiopia. I knew camels were still being used to transport salt from the region and a camel caravan was one of the key shots I wanted to get to illustrate a feature on this subject. I had been warned that there was a high chance of seeing no caravans at all so when my fixer and I set off in the late afternoon to take advantage of the nicer light, I had a sense of realistic expectation. Thankfully, luck was on my side and within an hour of leaving our camp we saw the caravan on the horizon. I stopped the car some way ahead so I could photograph the caravan coming towards me and continue shooting as it passed. I did of course underestimate how quickly the caravan moved so decided to give myself a second shot and ran to head off the caravan once more.
