An exquisite hand-coloured albumen print from the Getty Images Archive’s vintage room by Felice Beato, c. 1867. Beato’s expert use of photography mapped out a world on the cusp of immense change, in part accelerated by the new medium itself. A true pioneer, Beato was amongst the first to depict war in photographs, with his powerful reportage from the Crimean War and Indian Mutiny. ‘At Her Toilet’ is a fine example of the hand-colouring process popularised by the photographer from his commercial studio in Japan, a partnership with Charles Wirgman of the Illustrated London News. The process was said to be influenced by, and to resonate with, traditional Japanese watercolours and woodblock prints. #GettyImagesArchive #TBT #ThrowbackThursday
