Such was the scarcity of female photojournalists in the late 1940s, Grace Robertson made her first submission to Picture Post under the pseudonym Dick Muir – rejected with a note of advice, “Persevere, young man”. Robertson went on to become one of Britain’s finest, matching the tenacity and lyricism of her peers at the magazine, the archive of which provides the foundation for the Getty Images Hulton Archive. Published between 1938 and 1957, both the people Picture Post depicted and its pioneering use of the photographic essay and layouts bear that quality of perseverance recommended to the 18 year old Robertson. Typically diverse for a #PicturePost staffer, Grace covered well-preserved customs of sheep-farming in Snowdonia, Bluebell girls in Paris, a Butlins Holiday Camp and, in one unpublished story, childbirth – titled Analgesia, the inability to feel pain. 📷: Grace Robertson #WomensHistoryMonth #HultonArchive #throwbackthursday #tbt
