Launching into goalball week! 🔵
Goalball was invented in 1946 as rehabilitation for veterans who lost their eyesight in World War 2. It has been part of the Paralympic program since 1976.
Players throw a ball across a court into their opponent’s nine metre goal that spans the width of the court. Opponents block the ball using their bodies.
USA is the most successful team in men’s and women’s goalball tournaments, with a total of three gold, six silver and three bronze medals.
A goalball weighs 1250 grams, contain bells so the athletes can hear the ball moving across the court, and can travel at speeds up to 60km/h.
At paris2024 goalball will take place at the South Paris Arena, the same venue as
#Boccia and
#ParaTableTennis.
