Growing up, my mom and I had to break social and cultural norms of a women’s place is in the house. Going against this norm came slander and ridicule on our family name. My mom was the only mom to let her only daughter play sports during this time…the 80s. With the love and support of her and many teachers and coaches, I fell in love with many sports…soccer, basketball, volleyball, and track. Succeeding the most in basketball, I landed a scholarship at SMU in Dallas and with this success came more noise from our culture, but this time it was different. “Wow, Phonnary, your daughter is amazing!” “I can’t believe she went to school for free.” “Your daughter is so fit and strong and smart.” We shattered the stigma and I was the
