This week, I share a story that many of you have probably heard before—the one about my mom and how she came to my rescue at the Korean walnut cookie store inside the local HMart. I’m a fairly non-confrontational person, so when someone says something to me that is unapologetically unkind, racist, or otherwise inappropriate, there’s a part of me that instantly wants to hide. In this case, the aggressor found my weakness—the loathing I’d internalized about my body. I wanted to slink out of that little shop wrapped in an invisibility cloak from head to toe.
