I mentioned before that I am a Gilman Scholar. The Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship is a scholarship that is offered to students receiving Federal Pell Grants who are looking to study abroad. Without this opportunity I would not have been able to make this trip happen! With the help of the study abroad office along with friends and family reading over my application, I was able to receive $2,500 to go towards my study abroad education. Being an African American that has the opportunity to study abroad is something that I do not take lightly. With this opportunity not only do I represent UMBC, and the Gilman Scholars Program, but I represent minorities that may not believe studying abroad is for them. There are many opportunities for students to receive funding for studying abroad. Never let that stop you from applying.
