βœ”BIOL316L class The Phage Hunters course focuses on Bioinformatics. As someone who has a proclivity toward wet labs, this course has certainly opened another perspective! Through the use of various internal and web-based programs (and our best judgement), we identify and annotate phage genomes. Specifically, we are working in teams to annotate fragments of the phage Microdon. Likewise, we are developing other skills like reading scientific papers and preparing research presentations. Other days, after class, we tour different lab facilities in Barcelona or meet guest lecturers who speak about their research. πŸ”¬ This course has been a mix of team-centered and independent work under the guidance of Dr. Ivan Erill from UMBC. While a new challenge, we have all learned so much thus far! πŸ˜ŠπŸ’» #UMBCAbroad #UMBCInternational
