✨ Ireland is widely considered to be the birthplace of Halloween. The ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter, was celebrated on the night of October 31st. The Celts believed that on this night, the boundary between the living and the dead was at its thinnest, and spirits could cross over into the mortal world.
🔥 To ward off these spirits, people would light bonfires and wear costumes and masks to disguise themselves. The festival also involved feasting, storytelling, and games.
🎃 When Christianity came to Ireland, the festival of Samhain was gradually absorbed into the Christian tradition, and became known as All Hallows' Eve, or Halloween for short. Halloween eventually spread to other parts of the world through Irish immigrants, and today it is celebrated in many countries with costumes, trick-or-treating, and other spooky traditions!
