This week's film is a 2007 musical drama film directed by John Carney and starring Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová. "Once" tells the story of a street musician and a Czech immigrant who meet and fall in love while making music together on the streets of Dublin.
The film was shot on a shoestring budget of around $150,000, using digital cameras and a small crew. The music for the film was written and performed by Hansard and Irglová, who were both musicians in real life and had previously collaborated on a music project.
"Once" premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2007, where it won the Audience Award and the World Cinema Audience Award. It went on to receive critical acclaim and became a surprise hit, grossing over $23 million worldwide!
