Inspired by archival Polaroid photographs of the artist's mother from the 1980s, Mickalene Thomas: Better Nights recalls gatherings that Thomas's mother hosted, inspired by the local New Jersey play 'Put a Little Sugar in my Bowl'. The Better Nights installation transformed The Bass galleries into an immersive art experience. Better Nights opened the week of Art Basel Miami Beach at the Bass Museum for Art in 2019. It was a joyous and exuberant week of activity, with daily visits by thousands of excited art lovers and nightly parties packed shoulder to shoulder with patrons, critics, curators, and friends, all thrilled to share in the experience. Little did we know that just a few months later, the world would be transformed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
