Yesterday we attended a unique ceremony in Orthodox Brooklyn — the communal burning of bread for passover. It’s a remarkable tradition to witness, especially in the middle of a modern city like New York.
During Passover, Jews must refrain from consuming chametz, which includes any food product made from wheat, barley, rye, oats, or spelt that has fermented and risen. Throughout the 8 days of Passover, all bread is avoided, and neighborhood bakeries remain closed.
The burning ceremony is a symbolic act of cleansing and spiritual renewal. We attended a burning in Crown Heights, and there are also fires in Williamsburg.
