Nick Gargiulo (gargiulo_66) used to be the skinny kid with potential who lived across the street from Tony DeMatteo in Somers. The legendary Tuskers football coach was constantly in his ear, preaching about the virtue of getting bigger and stronger.
It was hall-of-fame advice.
Gargiulo quickly came to understand the value of iron and pasta. On the eve of the NFL draft, the offensive line prospect is carrying 318 pounds on a 6-foot-5 frame.
“I told him back in eighth grade he could be a pro,” DeMatteo said. “I remember how tall he was and told him this could happen if he started training and started working out.”
Gargiulo is on the verge of living the dream.
He is a projected backup offensive lineman or special teams player in the NFL, so the all-important phone call may not come until well into the weekend. The opening round of NFL Draft is Thursday, with Rounds 2 and 3 on Friday, and Rounds 4 through 7 on Saturday.
