When you’re a little girl playing your heart out and you dream of reaching the professional level or Olympic stage, you don’t think about what sacrifice it takes to get there or if it’ll be too hard to survive financially; you just chase those dreams and do what you love. Growing up as a female athlete the gender pay gap in professional sports was always there, but I only really began to pay attention to it when the US women’s national soccer team took a stand for equal pay in female sports (they were my idols as a kid). The strength in that team’s fight for equality inspired me as a little girl and am proud to play in one of the few sports today that award equal prize money to men and women athletes.
