UC Berkeley researchers recently published a study on the stagnation of the Latine studies major throughout the United States. The research cites that there is “significantly more to be done to ensure Latino equity and thriving in higher education” based on their findings, led by campus professors G. Cristina Mora and Nicholas Vargas and undergraduate student researcher Dominic Cedillo. The U.S. Department of Education’s National Center of Education Statistics found that “only 89 of the nation’s 2,600+ four-year higher education institutions currently offer a Latina/o/x Studies major,” as cited in the research. Additionally, the campus research concluded that most newly established Latine studies programs at four-year higher education institutions were private, and that an “increasing number” of programs established were located in the East Coast and Midwest.
