"Throughout my experience in soccer, I often see Black athletes praised on their speed, strength and tenacity. Even if those traits accurately describe that athlete, from an early age, we are led to believe that that is all that we contribute to the game. As a Black woman in the NWSL, I pride myself on constantly developing my awareness, my vision on the pitch and my versatility. For so many years people have made the argument that I am able to play in multiple positions because I am athletic. Now, there is some truth in that, but not once am I told that that is because I am a smart player who can read the game and understand multiple roles better than most. I have worked extremely hard in my career to break free from the stereotypes that have been placed on Black athletes.
